Who we are

SkimVid ("we", "our", "us") is a video summarisation service operated by Catalyst DataWorks, based in Birmingham, United Kingdom. We are the data controller for the personal information we process.

What data we collect

When you use SkimVid, we collect:

• Account information: Email address and password (hashed) when you sign up.
• Usage data: Video URLs you submit, transcripts generated, summary styles used, and chat messages sent within the app.
• Technical data: IP address, browser type, and timestamps of requests (collected automatically for security and analytics).

We do not collect sensitive personal data, and we do not track you across other websites.

How we use your data

We use your data to:

• Provide the SkimVid service — generating transcripts, summaries, and chat responses.
• Manage your account and enforce usage limits.
• Monitor costs and prevent abuse.
• Send transactional emails (account confirmation, password reset).
• Improve the service based on aggregate usage patterns.

Third-party services

We use the following third-party services to operate SkimVid:

• Supabase (EU/US) — authentication, database storage. Privacy policy
• Anthropic (Claude AI) (US) — generates summaries and chat responses. Transcript text is sent to their API for processing. Privacy policy
• Supadata (US) — fetches video transcripts from YouTube and TikTok. Privacy policy
• Railway (US) — hosts the application. Privacy policy
• Resend (US) — sends transactional emails. Privacy policy

Data retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. Video transcripts and summaries are cached to improve performance and reduce costs — cached data may be retained even after you delete a video from your history, but is not linked to your account once removed.

If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days.

Your rights (UK GDPR)

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

• Access — request a copy of your personal data.
• Rectification — correct inaccurate data.
• Erasure — request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten").
• Portability — receive your data in a portable format.
• Object — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
• Withdraw consent — where processing is based on consent.

Cookies

SkimVid uses only strictly necessary cookies for authentication (session tokens). We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party analytics cookies. No cookie consent is required for strictly necessary cookies under UK PECR regulations, but we disclose their use here for transparency.

International transfers

Some of our third-party service providers are based in the United States. Data transfers are protected by standard contractual clauses and the providers' compliance frameworks.

Children

SkimVid is not intended for users under 16 years of age. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify registered users of significant changes by email. The "last updated" date at the top indicates when the policy was last revised.
